Vorderrhein Bridge, Tavanasa/GR
Enhanced performance by a reduction in weight By replacing the heavy concrete roadway slab by a much lighter steel construction the load-bearing capacity of older bridges is increased and it makes them suitable for today’s demands of heavy traffic. What is important here – besides the corrosion protection – is the optimal bonding between the steel and the working layer of the roadway (usually a bitumen coating). Eclatin offers the solutions. The steel bridge, listed as a protected historic monument, was given a complete renovation, as commissioned by the cantonal government of Graubünden. For this the abutment was replaced as well as several damaged steel parts, before the whole construction was given a new anti-corrosion protection. In addition to this the concrete roadway-slab had to be replaced by an orthotropic deck, which makes crossing the bridge with greater loads possible.
